چکیده
O bstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a complex disorder consisting of periods of upper airway obstruction during sleep [1], which are terminated by arousals and oxyhaemoglobin desaturations. Most adults with this disorder present in mid-life with an up to ,20-yr progressive history of loud snoring often of increasing intensity, punctuated by witnessed apnoeas and resuscitative snorts. As sleep apnoea develops, patients may begin to complain of sleep disruption and frank daytime hypersomnolence. The reasons for the development and progression of this disorder, however, are not well understood.

Aim: It is believed that sampling of the lower airways by BAL in complicated patients with pulmonary infection is often contaminated with upper airways microorganisms. The aim of this study was to assess the value of this procedure and probability of contamination of samples by upper airways flora. Methods: In a prospective study 40 consecutive patients which were candidate for broncholaveolar ...
متن کاملThe pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a major source of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and represents an increasing burden on health care resources. Understanding underlying pathogenic mechanisms of OSA will ultimately allow for the development of rational therapeutic strategies. In this article, we review current concepts about the pathogenesis of OSA. Specifically, we consider the evidenc...

Spirometry and flow - volume loop show the abnormal pattern of pulmonary dysfunction and the site of the obstruction of upper and peripheral airways. For determinig the shape of flow - volume loop in obstruction of carina and bronchus we examined 19 patients with large airway obstruction documented with fiberoptic bronchoscopy via pulmonary function testing and flow volume loop performing. Two...
متن کاملManagement of Laryngotracheal and Tracheobronchial Injuries
Laryngotracheal and tracheobronchial injuries are uncommon, and their successful diagnosis and management often require a high level of expertise. This paper aimed at retrospective analysis of a thoracic surgeon's experience in the diagnosis and management of traumatic injuries to the larynx, trachea and major bronchi. Forty one patients with major airway trauma were managed from March 1994 to ...
متن کاملStructural and functional changes of peripheral muscles in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to identify new advances in our understanding of skeletal muscle dysfunction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). RECENT FINDINGS Recent studies have confirmed the relevance of muscle dysfunction as an independent prognosis factor in COPD. Animal studies have shed light on the molecular mechanisms governing skeletal mus...
